They are studded winter tires, the type that they use in rally and ice racing. The narrowness are to put more pressure on each stud so they push into the ice properly. They are driving on a frozen lake so it is essential to get enough traction.

Yep, part of why I posted it. Quite different from the bro-trucks where they fit big tires for no other reason than appearance. Here they fit small tires, because that is the best for the job.
